Technical Operations Manager – Infrastructure Reliability, E-Commerce Operations, Risk Mitigation

Eighteen years of senior systems engineering, now fronting the technical and operations work at High Minded Media.

The Systems Whisperer: Why Senior Engineering Means Fewer Rebuilds

Most small and mid-sized businesses are not fighting technical problems. They are living with the consequences of success.

  • Inventory systems that grew organically and no longer reconcile.
  • Vendor stacks nobody fully maps.
  • Documentation that stopped updating three years ago.
  • Processes held together by whoever was there when it was built.

That is the work I am interested in.

My services at HMM include comprehensive audits, platform migrations, vendor and SaaS evaluation, e-commerce operations support, and technical project management. I do not rebuild from scratch. I take the systems a business already has and make them resilient, efficient, and quiet.

One Studio, Three Disciplines, No Handoffs

Most small consultancies that offer technical services are running a single specialty: SEO, or web design, or IT support.

HMM pairs a senior SEO strategist and content architect with a senior systems engineer, which means the infrastructure, the search visibility, and the content strategy can be addressed as one connected problem instead of three separate ones.

For clients in HMM’s verticals, that pairing matters in specific ways:

  • Regulated plant-based operators face inventory and compliance reconciliation problems that require structured-data thinking.
  • Specialty makers have multi-channel inventory drift across their POS, e-commerce, and wholesale systems.
  • Nonprofits carry donor data and institutional memory that needs real backup and access control, not informal storage.
  • E-commerce brands need migrations done by someone who understands how SEO equity moves with URL structure.
  • Integrative wellness practices run on improvised tech stacks that break at exactly the wrong moment.

My background maps directly onto all of it.

Eighteen Years at the Intersection of Scale and Failure

My work splits into four areas of deep expertise, each one mapping directly to the kinds of problems HMM clients encounter as they grow.

Observability, Incident Response, and Reliability Engineering

I have architected monitoring and alerting systems across multiple generations of infrastructure, from on-premise Nagios deployments to cloud-native observability stacks.

  • Led PagerDuty architecture at Sephora across a global POS footprint
  • Refactored NagiosXI for high availability and geographical sharding at the office, data center, and store level
  • Re-architected Technorati’s monitoring infrastructure as a fully automated client of a single audited inventory database, reducing alert noise by over 90 percent

Quiet systems are well-built systems. Noisy ones are telling you something about the organization, not just the code.

Platform and Infrastructure Administration at Scale

I have administered environments ranging from 300-plus servers to 1000-plus across multi-site and multi-region deployments.

  • Cloud infrastructure on AWS, virtualization layers, and configuration management through Puppet and SaltStack
  • Every generation of deployment automation, from classic CI pipelines through containerized workflows with Docker and orchestrated release engineering
  • Traffic-heavy Java, PHP, and Node applications kept running at scale
  • Administration of HBase, MySQL, Redis, and caching tiers
  • Management of the network and security equipment underneath all of it

The specifics of the stack shift every few years. The thinking doesn’t.

E-Commerce Operations and Inventory Systems

I have maintained multi-platform inventory integrity across Squarespace, Shopkeep, and proprietary CMS environments.

  • Built custom ETL pipelines to reconcile vendor data across sources that were never meant to talk to each other
  • Redesigned in-store stock auditing workflows that eliminated store closure during reconciliation
  • Delivered updates to procedures, internal tools, software, and hardware across the retail footprint

The pattern repeats across industries: businesses outgrow the systems they started with, and the reconciliation work to bring everything back into alignment is where the real risk and the real value sit.

Release Engineering, Deployment, and Developer Tooling

I have designed and maintained build, deployment, and configuration management systems across multiple companies and technology generations.

  • CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins, Bamboo, and modern equivalents
  • Containerized deployment workflows with Docker
  • Source control administration
  • Internal tools that engineers rely on to ship safely

Good deployment infrastructure is invisible when it works and catastrophic when it doesn’t. I build for the former.

A Dispassionate Working Relationship With Catastrophe

I offer hands-on contextual expertise, a compulsion for tidiness, and a deep familiarity with the intersection of human error and mechanical failure. I ingest context and provide practicality and discernment, with a hint of logistical paranoia.

My creative work mirrors my professional projects, exploring edge cases and failure modes as creative material rather than problems to eliminate.

I build procedural art that relies on manually introduced errors, work with recursive model collapse as a generative process, and use video corruption as a medium in its own right. Explore my personal site at scythebrundle.com.

Bring Me In Before the Next Thing Breaks

If you are running a business dealing with the consequences of success, inconsistent inventory, ad-hoc processes, minimal documentation, or a vendor stack you no longer fully understand, I am the person to bring in.

I am currently leading technical operations engagements at HMM, including vendor and SaaS audits, e-commerce migrations, digital asset management buildouts, monitoring and alerting system design, and technical project management for complex site or platform transitions.
